Personality:

James is, at his very core, a man of action. He doesn't sit around easily, time off does not treat him well, he needs constant challenges. It's one of the things - arguably the thing - that makes him such an excellent agent. He's driven by a desire to serve and succeed; M says that orphans make the best agents, and she's right: James is unmarried and has no surviving relatives, he has no connections outside of his job, and that - in addition to his inclination to action - is what makes him one of MI6's best. James Bond not putting his country first is not James Bond at all; and without MI6 backing him, all James would be is a brute murderer.

That isn't to say that had he not joined the Ministry of Defense he'd have become some criminal lowlife; there is a certain measure of the knight errant in him, a small inclination toward the heroic. It expresses itself in different ways - James will never be a beacon of goodness and heroism, that's not his way and it would get him killed very, very quickly. James is a realist, and realistically, he knows that he would like to always get the bad guy, save the girl, protect the Realm, but he knows that someone usually dies, and more often than not, it's the innocent.

Too many women have died for James. Solange Dimitrios, Agent Fields, Sévérine. Vesper Lynd. He knows better now than to let it eat at him, knows that moving on and keeping his head on straight is necessary. It makes him detached, in so many ways, and while for a time it was extremely unhealthy - after Vesper died, Bond forgot the important things that drive him, and was compelled only by his inconsolable rage - James has grown, and dealt with his grief. Vesper once accused him of having his armor back on; she was wrong, then. Now, his armor has become a part of himself, his very nature. James Bond loves nice cars, he loves driving fast, he loves fine wines, but he does not fall in love, not any longer.

There is something to be said of James Bond's loyalty, whether it's to an old woman giving orders or to his country. MI6 has betrayed him in the past; in Bolivia, under pressure from the CIA, a capture or kill order was released on him. M had him arrested, but despite the way they butt heads - and they did, frequently - Bond is, at the end of the day, extremely loyal to her. He understood that she did what she had to do then, and allowed him to do what he had to do. He accomplished the mission - he always does - and James grew out of the considerable, inconsolable rage that had been fueling him since Vesper's death. His early days as a double-oh were less than stellar, but he grew into the role. Collateral deaths surrounding his missions diminished, and he easily became one of the best agents the Ministry of Defense has had in a long time. He was stalwart in his dedication to his missions, to his job, to his country. Even after not being trusted to finish his mission in Istanbul, even after being shot and left for dead by his own, he came back to London to finish the job, and protect the Realm.

Maybe it is a pathetic love of country, as he referred to it with Silva - but it's his, and in many ways, it defines him. He's James Bond, 007, in Her Majesty's Secret Service. It's all he wants - and, through another lens, it's all he has left.

"How much do you know about Bond, Camille, because he's rather a tragic case. His MI6 says he's
difficult to control. Nice way of saying that everything he touches seems to wither and die."

Dominic Greene said this about him, and it's no less true for the fact that it was spoken by an enemy. Most people that James has gotten close to, allowed in, are no longer around. His parents died when he was a child; Vesper was the first woman he really loved, and she killed herself rather than face the results of her blackmail; M died in his arms. That's to say nothing of the others who have died around him, for him, because of him. Death is a quintessential part of his life, as it must be for anyone with a license to kill. These losses haven't kept him from reaching out, from making connections or flirting - but they do make it difficult for him to really let anyone in. If he doesn't get attached, it won't hurt so much when he's alone again.

That's all very maudlin to describe, and that's not a good word to describe Bond himself. Whatever comes his way, he keeps going. He never backs down. He perseveres. Because there's always some bomb-maker, or terrorist, or would-be world-dominator to take down. James does his job, and he carries on.

Which is why winding up in Teleios is going to particularly piss him off. This isn't where he belongs, and it certainly isn't where he's needed. He's still grieving, though he's never quite mastered how to, so being jerked away from all that's just happened will be jarring, frustrating, and infuriating. On the one hand, it's an escape from the mountain of paperwork that awaits him, not to mention the hurt. M's name will be added to the memorial wall, and he'll walk past it every day and remember; escaping that is a blessing. But escaping it to come here is nothing of the sort. James isn't a criminal, and he knows it: what he's done has been (mostly) in the name of MI6 and his country. He isn't guilty. Finding out he has to redeem himself is going to be galling.
